Nepal opened the Kanchenjunga area to trekkers in 1988 and Mt. Kanchenjungha(8586m) is the second tallest in Nepal and third tallest mountain in the world. Mt. Musk deer and blue sheep are mostly found here and also the abominable snow man YETI is believed exist here.A journey to Kanchenjunga trekking area is a special treat- starting from the tropical lowlands through great rhododendron forests and lovely villages of east Nepal up to the glacier and overwhelming views. Travelling around this part also gives an opportunity to enjoy and experience the traditional culture of Rai and Limbu, the native locals of this area.
Kanchenjunga Conservation Area spread in an area of 2,035 square Kilometers and KCAP area has a rich diversity of wildlife including snow leopard, Himalayan black bear, musk deer red panda and others. Impheyan, pheasant, red-billed blue magpie, shy drogue are the major birds found in Kanchenjunga trekking route.
We begin the journey to Kanchenjunga with a flight from Kathmandu to Taplejung (Suketar). From Suketar the trek leads to Yemphudin through the Khesewa and Mamankhe. And continue trek to Tseram, Ramche and explore to Yalung Ri Glacier. After crossing Selele/Sinion-La and Miring-La pass reach Ghunsa village which is bit challenging and adventurous. After one day rest in Ghunsa village, our trip continue to Lhonak and Pangpema (5140 meters) which is also the Base Camp for expeditions attempting the North Face of Kanchenjunga 2 and the culmination of the first part of the trek.
The best time for trekking Kanchanjungha is spring and autumn season. A few teahouses are seen in route in the national park area; however, teahouse trekking is not sufficient so the best way to trek here is in group through a good trekking agency that can meet the requirements and contingencies that come up.
